"We had a community facility committee directed by community members. We had a company come in and look at our facilities and do a facility study and looked at what it would take to update our facilities and bring them up to code and fix safety issues. And then look at what it would cost to replace the facility. What the facility committee recommended was that we build a high school addition at the South Terrace site, and make updates to the South Terrace building as well."
Carlton Board of Education
Carlton Public Schools has been working since the middle of 2016 to address facility challenges. An assessment process included significant community engagement to gather parent, student, staff and community input. It also included assessments for educational adequacy, demographic studies, and the current condition of our facilities. A Community Facilities Committee helped determine the final proposal in the 2017 Bond Referendum.
The very beginning of our process started in 2014, when the school board, working with the community, was tasked with developing a strategic plan. The result was a powerful 5 year mission and vision for moving our district forward. Our vision includes six priorities with number 4 being “Make improvements to facilities while developing larger facility goals.” Details are below.
The Carlton School District is stronger today than it was when the decade began!
Since 2014, the District has made significant accomplishments based on priorities identified in the Long Range Plan.
1. Evaluate and conclude consolidation options
2. Employee support and professional development.
3. Improve climate, culture and accountability.
4. Make improvements to facilities while developing larger facility goals.
5. Communication, marketing and public relations.
The district has prioritized communication with parents and community members through increased use of social media, district-wide/parent email and voice communications, online parent resources and parent/teacher communications, printed materials and public meetings.
6. Referendum Renewal
The Operating Levy was renewed by the community in November 2016.
